TRI-CITIES, WA - We want to point out some bright spots in our local economy. Action News reporter Molly Kelleher introduces you to the pair launching a new website and a new magazine to help promote local mom and pops.

Phuket Thai is no big chain, just a local shop, locally owned and sometimes that means getting by without big advertising.

"Our customers are from word of mouth, people just tell people and that's how people hear about us, " said restaurant owner Joy Bouttvong.

But word of mouth only gets you so far, so one pair of young entrepreneurs is kicking it up a notch.

"Mom and pop shops are struggling they are going out of business because people don't know they exist," said Becky Ferguson.

That's why Becky Ferguson and Cory Wright cooked up "Taste Tri-Cities". The website was just launched and the first magazine will come out next month.

All this was born from one hometown kid and a transplant who both just made some simple observations.

"As soon as I moved here everyone said there's no where to eat in the Tri-Cities but that's because there's no Chili's but there is plenty of options out there," said Ferguson.

Sure the names aren't as recognizable as Applebees or Olive Garden, but maybe someday places like Magill's, Rosy's Diner and Phuket Thai won't be a hidden gem, just a gem.

"Our goal in 2009 is to be the fandango for 'what's for dinner?'"
